CW-FIT Best Practices

Classroom Management: Expectations and Pre-Corrects

As educators, we strive to create a positive and productive classroom environment. The CW-FIT (Classroom-Wide behavior support that FITS) approach offers research-based and effective strategies to enhance classroom management and foster a positive classroom culture and increase engagement. CW-FIT is comprised of 4 components. This issue will highlight best practices from Component 1: Expectations and Pre-corrects.

1. Teach and Reteach Expectations Frequently

Establishing clear expectations is fundamental. However, simply teaching these expectations once is not enough. Consistently revisiting and re-teaching classroom rules ensures that all students are aligned and understand what is expected of them. Incorporate brief refreshers into your daily routine, especially after breaks or transitions.

2. Tie Expectations to School-Wide and Classroom Standards

Linking classroom expectations to school-wide standards helps create a unified approach to behavior management. This connection fosters a sense of community and reinforces the importance of shared values. Displaying classroom and school-wide expectations prominently in your classroom can serve as a constant reminder for students.

3. Get Buy-In From Students

Engagement is key to successful classroom management. Involve students in the creation of classroom expectations, especially for middle school students. When students help develop the rules, they are more likely to take ownership and adhere to them. Collaborating on a list of expectations creates a sense of accountability and pride in their classroom culture.

4. Remember to do Pre-Corrects

Proactively addressing potential misbehavior can prevent disruptions before they occur. Use pre-corrects by reminding students of expected behaviors before transitions or activities. For instance, prior to group work, you might say, “Remember to stay on task and help each other.” This prepares students for success and reinforces the expectations.
